Hopefully by now you've heard that Craft 3 is coming out soon, and in fact is already in public beta. It's great to see some new features and improvements in Craft 3, and if nothing else, the sheer speed of everything should entice you to give it a try.
What does this mean for Verbb and our collection of plugins?
The only thing that's changed — is everything#
As great as Craft 3 is, there are some caveats. It's built on the next iteration of Yii – Yii 2, which changes some fundamental things for Craft as a whole. Not only that, but the Craft team has taken the opportunity to refactor things as well, meaning even more changes.
Its like the familiar saying of "you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs" in that things won't improve without breaking a few things along the way! So in the short term, all plugins will need to be almost completely re-written for Craft 3. We're up for the challenge.
The road to Craft 3#
We're thrilled to say all our plugins will be making the migration across to Craft 3, and we're eagerly working our way through them right now. As Craft 3 is yet to be officially released, we'll be running Craft 2 and Craft 3 plugins in tandem. Head to our plugin page to see what we have available for Craft 3.
Below, we've provided a little guide on the changes you can expect from Craft 2 to Craft 3 versions of our plugins:
- Feed Me - Free/$99 ($30 renewal)
- Super Table - Free
- Field Manager - Free
- CP Nav - Free
- Workflow - $49 ($15 renewal)
- Image Resizer - Free
- Comments - $49 ($15 renewal)
- Social Poster - $49 ($15 renewal)
- Expanded Singles - Free
- Multi Add - Free
You'll notice that Workflow, Comments and Social Poster are now paid plugins, and not free as they current are. We will keep the Craft 2 versions of these plugins free and continue to support them (with minor bug fixes — not new features).
Renewal fees#
One of the biggest changes in Craft 3 will be renewal fees. You'll pay the full price once for 1 year of support and updates. Once this year is up, you can continue to use the plugin as-is, but you'll miss out on any new features or bug fixes. A renewal grants you another year of support and updates, at a severely discounted price. Its the trade-off between continuing to support our plugins properly, and not asking you to pay an exorbitant amount each year.
More details on licensing and the plugin store will be available as the Craft team work on it. Contact us if you have any questions.
Craft 2 and support#
We want to be upfront and clear with regards to supporting Craft 2 versions of our plugins. The great news is, that we'll continue to support them until December 2018. This will be roughly 1 year after our official transition to Craft 3.
So what does this cover? When things plain break or no longer work (within reason), we'll fix up for you. However – we will not aim to port new features from Craft 3 versions back to Craft 2 versions. If we develop new features, you'll need to look ahead to Craft 3 versions.
Stay in the loop#
We'll be keeping you in the loop with progress via Twitter and the Craft Slack, so be on the lookout. Contact us if you have any questions.
