Video Picker is a new plugin in the same vein as Icon Picker, allowing you to pick videos in a field.
We know you never could've guessed that from the plugin name, so we'll let that shocking revelation sink in for a moment.
Sources#
We support YouTube and Vimeo at the time of release, but as Video Picker uses our Auth module, it opens the door for lots of different providers. We'll be adding more now that we've got Video Picker out the door!
Once you've created your sources to connect with your favourite provider, you can start using the field.
Video Explorer#
You can either copy/paste the URL to a video directly in the field or browse your library of videos from your source. Video Picker will pull in your folders/channels/feeds, along with a general search source-wide (not just your videos). You can even preview them right there!
Once you've found your wonderful video to use, you'll be shown a preview of the video with some extra details. Video Picker will capture a few useful bits of information for you to access, like duration, thumbnails, plays and more.
In your templates, you've got plenty of options on how to use this content, from embedding the video to just rendering a link to it — it's your choice.
Wrapping up#
And, that's it! A simple field type that gets out of your way to make picking videos a seamless experience.
Some of you might be familiar with the (now abandoned) Dukt Videos (opens new window) plugin. Video Picker aims to be the unofficial successor to Videos, and we've taken several design cues from their excellent plugin and built on them.
If you're looking to migrate from Videos for Craft 3 or Craft 4 — the good news is that both plugins are compatible with each other. Just switch the field type from Videos to Video Picker, and you're good to go. You will need to set up new providers, however, but that's a once-off task.
Video Picker (opens new window) is available today for Craft 4 and Craft 5 for $49.
One more thing...#
We recently took over ownership of the Video Embedder (opens new window) plugin for Craft 3, with the aim to port it to Craft 4 and Craft 5 as part of our migration service. However, we've decided against having multiple plugins for video handling, particularly as we feel Video Picker will provide a much richer experience.
However, being a free plugin, and for Craft 3 (which has reached EOL), we didn't want this plugin to become a barrier for upgrading. Particularly as Video Picker is a paid plugin.
Which is why we're offering a free Video Picker license for anyone wishing to upgrade their Video Embedder plugin to Craft 4 and switch to Video Picker. Just get in touch with a screenshot of the plugin in action and we'll sort you out with a license.
Otherwise, you'll find that embedding videos to be a very similar, drop-in replacement to Video Embedder, with the bonus of having a field type available for your content editors if you wish to include that — but it's totally optional.
